It wasn't too long ago that producing 200 hp was from a truck or Jeep engine was a big deal. Now, Can-Am has announced that for the 2022 model year its Maverick X3 Turbo RR models will be the first UTV to crack the 200 hp mark. While not much of a leap for the company, as their 2021 Turbo RR models produced an already best-in-class 195 hp, being the first to hit the 200 hp mark sure brings a pile of bragging rights. It also took an impressive amount of engineering work for Can-Am to reach this milestone. The company's 900cc triple-cylinder Rotax ACE engine received upgraded pistons, a new turbocharger, an ultra-efficient and durable intercooler, and high-performance air filter to ensure those 200 hp would be reliable while running in the harshest of environments.
For the 2022 model year, Can-Am has re-engineered the clutch system for Maverick X3 Turbo RR models. These side-by-sides now utilized the company's new pDrive roller-clutch system and Quick Response System X (QRS-X) CVT. What this equates to in the real-world, at least according to Can-Am, is quicker acceleration and "instant-on" power at all times.
The company also addressed on of our other gripes from the 2021 model, which was tire choice. For 2022 Can-Am is offering new 30 and 32-inch Maxxis Carnivore tire options, while also increasing ground clearance. We still wish the company would put the larger 32-inch tire on the desert-oriented DS models, however. In terms of function, Can-Am has also strengthened the Maverick X3's frame in key areas and the revolutionary Fox Smart-Shox adaptive suspension continues on from the 2021 model year.
The 2022 Can-Am Maverick X3 happens to be the most heavily updated side-by-side in the stable. It gets an all-new engine that is the most powerful yet in a UTV. Everything around this engine like the chassis, suspension, and brakes have been beefed up to tackle the added performance. It also gets a Smart Lok, which Can-Am claims to be "the most advanced off-road front differential".
